Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the questions we hear most often.

Getting Started

Is this a medical app?+

No. Senior Support Resources is a caregiving coordination tool, not a medical device. We help you organize medications, track appointments, coordinate with family, and find resources. Always consult healthcare providers for medical decisions.

Does my parent need a smartphone?+

No. Your parent does not need to use the app at all. You and your family manage everything. If your parent has a basic cell phone, they can receive simple text message check-ins, but even that is optional.

Can I use this for my spouse instead of a parent?+

Absolutely. During setup, choose "I'm caring for my spouse or partner" and the app adjusts its language and features accordingly. Everything works the same way.

Can my parent use this app themselves?+

Yes. During setup, choose "I'm managing my own care" and the app switches to first-person mode. It becomes a personal health and planning tool, without the family coordination features unless they want them.

How long does setup take?+

About 3 minutes. You will answer questions about the care situation - conditions, living situation, daily needs. You can skip anything you are not sure about and come back to it later.

Is there a demo I can try?+

Yes. Click "Try the Demo" on the home page to explore the app with sample data. No account needed. The demo shows a realistic caregiving scenario so you can see how everything works.

What if my parent has dementia?+

Senior Support Resources has extensive dementia-specific features: behavior logging, sundowning guides, wandering safety support, communication strategies, and conversation scripts for difficult topics. The app adjusts recommendations based on cognitive status.

Do I need to be tech-savvy to use this?+

Not at all. The app is designed for people who may not be comfortable with technology. The interface is straightforward, help is available on every page, and you can take a guided tour anytime.

What is the Smart Helper?+

The Smart Helper is your knowledgeable care advisor that knows your loved one's conditions, medications, and care situation. It goes beyond simple Q&A: you can ask it to add a medication, update a care note, look up drug interactions, or pull together information from across your care data. Click the teal bar at the top of any page to start a conversation. Your conversation history is saved so you can pick up where you left off.

What is Smart Upload?+

Smart Upload lets you add care information by forwarding an email, uploading a document, or snapping a photo. The system reads the content and extracts relevant data: medications from discharge papers, appointment details from a doctor's letter, or prescription info from a pill bottle label. You review what was extracted before anything is saved.

Health & Medications

How accurate is the drug interaction checker?+

It uses data from the FDA (OpenFDA) and the National Library of Medicine (RxNorm). These are the same databases pharmacists reference. However, always confirm critical interactions with your pharmacist or doctor.

Can I track vitals like blood pressure?+

Yes. The vitals dashboard lets you track blood pressure, weight, blood sugar, temperature, heart rate, and oxygen levels. You can see trends over time and share reports with doctors.

How do I prepare for a doctor appointment?+

Go to the appointment in the Appointments section and tap "Generate Questions." The system will create a list of questions to ask the doctor based on current conditions, recent symptoms, and medication changes.

How do I track surgeries, falls, or ER visits?+

Go to Health and Medical, then Acute Events and Procedures. You can log any health event (falls, surgeries, hospitalizations, infections, procedures) with details and follow-up dates. The page also includes recovery guides for 14 common procedures like hip replacement, heart stent, cataract surgery, and more.

Daily Care

What is the Care Skills Library?+

A collection of over 80 detailed guides covering everything from bathing assistance to managing diabetes to catheter care. Guides are organized by category and personalized to highlight what is most relevant to your situation.

How do text check-ins work?+

You set up a schedule (daily, twice daily, or weekly) and simple questions ("How are you feeling today?"). We send a text message at the scheduled time. The response is logged, and if something seems concerning, your care circle gets an alert.

Family & Coordination

Can siblings in different states use this?+

Yes, that is exactly what this is built for. Everyone in the care circle sees the same information, can log visits, complete tasks, and stay coordinated regardless of where they live.

What is the equity tracker?+

It tracks time, money, and effort contributions from each family member. Many families struggle with uneven caregiving loads. The tracker promotes transparency and helps facilitate fair distribution of responsibilities.

Can I use this without any family members?+

Absolutely. Many users are solo caregivers. The app works perfectly for one person. Family coordination features are simply there if you need them.

Can my family help with groceries and errands?+

Yes. The Shared Supply List (in Family and Coordination) lets anyone in your Care Circle add items that need to be picked up, sorted by category. The Help Board lets you post specific needs (meals, rides, errands, yard work) that friends, neighbors, and extended family can volunteer for.

Planning & Resources

How is guidance personalized?+

Every response considers the care recipient's specific conditions, cognitive status, mobility level, living situation, insurance type, veteran status, and other profile data. The same question gets different answers for different situations.

Where do facility ratings come from?+

Nursing home and home health agency ratings come from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS). They are based on health inspections, staffing levels, and quality measures. This is the same data shown on Medicare.gov.

Can you help me find benefits my parent qualifies for?+

Yes. The benefit eligibility screener checks against major federal and state programs based on age, income, location, and veteran status. It covers Medicare savings, SNAP, VA benefits, LIHEAP, SSI, and more.

What legal documents do we need?+

At minimum: Healthcare Power of Attorney, Financial Power of Attorney, and an Advance Directive (living will). The Legal section walks you through each one, explains why it matters, and provides state-specific guidance.

How do I protect my loved one from scams?+

The Scam Protection tools (under Emergency and Safety) include a database of current active scams, an "Is this a scam?" quick reference, reporting guides with phone numbers, and tips for preventing exploitation. The Financial Protection page covers credit freezes, subscription audits, and trusted contact designations at banks.

Self-Care

I feel guilty taking time for myself+

This is the single most common feeling among caregivers. Research consistently shows that caregivers who practice self-care provide better care and sustain it longer. Taking care of yourself is not selfish - it is essential.

What is anticipatory grief?+

Grief that occurs before a loss. When you watch a parent decline, you grieve the person they were, the future you imagined, and the relationship that is changing. It is real grief, and it is normal to feel it while your loved one is still alive.

Account & Privacy

Is it really free?+

The core app is free forever, including care tracking, Smart Helper guidance, and the care skills library. The Plus plan ($12.99/mo) adds unlimited Smart Helper conversations, SMS reminders, Smart Upload, and weekly digests. The Family plan ($24.99/mo) supports up to 3 care recipients with priority Smart Helper access and phone support. Founding members lock in 40% off for life.

How is my data protected?+

All data is encrypted in transit and at rest. We use Supabase with Row Level Security, meaning your data is isolated at the database level. We never sell data, never show ads, and never share information with third parties.

How is this different from a spreadsheet or Google Doc?+

Spreadsheets do not check drug interactions, generate questions for doctor visits, analyze home safety photos, screen for benefit eligibility, send text check-ins, or provide personalized guidance based on your parent's specific conditions.

Can I export my data?+

Yes. Go to Settings and choose Data & Privacy to download all your data in a standard format. You can also download formatted PDF and Word reports (Emergency Card, Care Summary, Weekly Report, Medication List) from the Settings page. Your data belongs to you.

Can I download reports as PDF or Word files?+

Yes. Go to Settings and open the Reports tab. You can download four report types in PDF or Word (DOCX) format: Emergency Card (wallet-sized medical info), Care Summary (full overview for doctor visits), Weekly Report (past seven days of activity), and Medication List (printable reference with dosages and prescribers). PDF is best for printing; Word is useful if you need to edit before sharing.

What plans are available?+

There are three plans. Free includes core care tracking, the care skills library, and emergency tools. Plus ($12.99/mo) adds unlimited Smart Helper conversations, SMS reminders, Smart Upload, PDF/Word report export, and weekly care digests. Family ($24.99/mo) adds support for up to 3 care recipients, priority Smart Helper access, and phone support. Founding members who sign up during launch get 40% off for life.
